Perfect!

📚 DSE Writing – Mental Health Collocations

1. Challenges & Pressures (挑戰與壓力)

Academic Burden (學業重擔)

  • Background: In the highly competitive academic environment of Hong Kong, students often feel compelled to engage in the relentless pursuit of excellence
  • Many teenagers shoulder immense expectations (背負巨大期望) from their parents and teachers, fearing that one slip-up will ruin their future.
  • The spoon-fed education system (填鴨式教育) often leaves students feeling overwhelmed and burnt out (不知所措和筋疲力盡), leading to a lack of motivation.
  • Consequence: This chronic stress (長期壓力) can take a heavy toll on (對…造成嚴重代價) their cognitive abilities, often impairing memory and concentration (損害記憶力和注意力).

Social Media & Peer Pressure (社交媒體與同輩壓力)

  • Living in the digital age, teenagers are exposed to the pervasive influence of social media
  • Many fall into the trap of making detrimental comparisons (進行有害的比較) with the curated lives (精心修飾的生活) of influencers, leading to feelings of inadequacy.
  • The constant need to seek external validation (尋求外在認同) through “likes” and comments can severely distort one’s self-image (扭曲自我形象).
  • Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) creates a sense of anxiety, making it difficult for teens to disconnect and unwind

Family Expectations (家庭期望)

  • The widening generation gap (代溝) often leads to a breakdown in communication (溝通破裂).
  • Many teenagers feel suffocated by their parents’ tendency to draw unfair comparisons (進行不公平的比較) with siblings or peers. They feel they can never live up to the high expectations (達到極高的期望) set for them.
  • Discord within the family (家庭不和) creates a tense atmosphere at home. Instead of being a sanctuary (避難所), home becomes another source of anxiety.

2. Resilience & Coping Mechanisms (韌性與應對機制)

Emotional Regulation (情緒管理)

  • Instead of bottling up feelings (壓抑情感), it is vital for teenagers to find a healthy emotional outlet (情緒宣洩口), such as art, sports, or journaling.
  • We must learn to acknowledge and embrace our vulnerabilities rather than putting on a brave front
It is okay not to be okay. True strength lies not in silence, but in having the courage to articulate our inner turmoil

Building Resilience (建立韌性)

  • Life is full of ups and downs; we must learn to weather the storm (經受風暴) and view failures as stepping stones.
  • Developing a growth mindset (成長心態) allows us to see challenges as opportunities to cultivate resilience (培養韌性).
  • Thoughts 感言: Resilience is the anchor that holds us steady when the waves of anxiety crash against us. It is the ability to bounce back from setbacks (從挫折中重新振作) stronger than before.

3. What if we seek help…

Support Systems (支援系統)

A strong support network provides a sense of belonging (歸屬感) and reminds us that we are never alone in this battle.

Background: Unfortunately, there is still a lingering stigma attached to mental illness (精神疾病的污名) in society, causing many to suffer in silence. Many hesitate to reach out for help (伸出援手求助) for fear of being judged.

Benefit: Destigmatizing mental health issues (去污名化) is the first step toward a healthier society.

Talking to a confidant (知己) or a counselor can help alleviate the burden (減輕負擔) on our shoulders.
